Our custom-built UK and US training centres are proving a great success with approvals granted by various national and international training and award bodies such as EMTA Awards Ltd (EAL), the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) and the American Petroleum Institute (API). We are actively participating with industry work groups such as IADC, Oil and Gas UK and IMCA to raise standards and provide dedicated training courses and support materials to improve the skills of the Oil and Gas Industry workforce and hence improve safety overall.
To facilitate delivering NSL training and NSL / EAL competence standards worldwide, we are now appointing selected training partners in strategic locations to suit the ever developing Oil and Gas Industry. Before any agreement is put in place, these companies are vetted by the NSL quality assurance team / technical department and their training facilities upgraded as required to be able to deliver the practical exercises. This normally involves the fabrication and installation of steel towers and rigging support steel framework.
Their instructors are then trained by senior NSL staff to deliver the NSL training courses to the high standards that NSL / EAL maintain and thereafter, the companies are audited on a regular basis. All certification and competence documentation is routed through NSL qualified skills assessors so that we can keep a tight control on the quality of the product.
An agreement is already in place with RigMarine (Europe) Ltd in Baku to look after the Caspian area. We are in the final stages of completing the agreement with KB Associates Pte in Singapore to cover South East Asia. We have begun the partnering process with Skysite Offshore in South Africa to cover all of the African countries and we have also begun the partnering process with Puglisevich in Canada to cover Canada, Alaska and various northern states in America.
This is an on-going expansion to NSL’s activities so watch this space to see when our products and services become available in your area.

Crane Operator Assessment
|
|
NSL has a team of more than 40 Instructors / Skills Assessors, most of whom are qualified and capable of carrying out Crane Operator assessments in accordance with BS ISO 15513 and BS 7121.
Assessment Procedure
The assessment begins with a questionnaire. This enables the assessor to confirm that the Crane Operator’s knowledge is adequate. The Operator is also interviewed to assess their experience on the specific type of crane they operate. The Assessor then observes the Operator performing various practical exercises according to the skills level they are being assessed against. Observation is from Deck Level and where possible, also from the Cab / Operator Level. Feedback is given during the assessment, and also at the end during the debrief, when the Operator is informed of the result. The assessment is only completed when every relevant unit of the standard has been covered.
Typical elements covered:
Stage 1 - Basic Deck Operations Under Supervision
• Handling containers, tubulars and pipe-work, loads with an offset C of G
• Hand signals and radio communications
• Full pre-shift inspection of the crane, knowledge of company procedures, knowledge of the crane, knowledge of basic slinging including sling angles and tensions
Stage 2 - Deck Operations Unsupervised
• Handling containers, tubulars and pipe-work, loads with an offset C of G
• Hand signals and radio communications
• Full pre-shift inspection of the crane, knowledge of company procedures, knowledge of the crane, knowledge of basic slinging including sling angles and tensions. Also, knowledge of emergency operating systems and procedures
Stage 3 - Deck Operations Unsupervised And Supply Vessel Lifting Operations
• Handling containers, tubulars and pipe-work, loads with an offset C of G
• Hand signals and radio communications
• Full pre-shift inspection of the crane, knowledge of company procedures, knowledge of the crane, knowledge of basic slinging including sling angles and tensions, knowledge of emergency operating systems and procedures
• The operator would also be required to demonstrate both theoretical and practical experience of; dynamic loading, sea states, bulk hose operations, wind-speeds and related company and crane operating limitations. Also, all operations regarding loading and unloading of supply vessels
