Specialised Rigging Projects
To supplement and enhance our existing services NSL are creating and can now offer our clients 3–man Rigging Squads made up of one Lifting Supervisor and two competent Riggers to carry out special projects (larger squads may be available upon request).
Our rigging personnel will be qualified to the high standards we set, receive additional training, produce NSL approved lifting plans, work to the strictest criteria and have the support of our Technical Department.
They will also have, if required, the tools available to deliver structured coaching and mentoring to existing lifting personnel.
Independent Technical Reviews & Appraisals
This is a service where our engineers make a field visit to review either systems of work, performance levels of personnel (including Crane Operator Assessments to international standards) or standards of maintenance on plant and equipment with a view to their cost effectiveness. They can also perform feasibility studies for proposed modifications to plant and/or any changes to existing operational procedures. This service includes mechanical handling reviews on oil & gas installations during construction, vessels and drilling rigs prior to them being chartered by the operating company.
NSL also perform Failure Investigations. We are often called upon as third party / expert witnesses in court.
Engineering Design & Rigging Supervision Services
This is a specialist service dealing with all mechanical handling and installation problems incorporating everything from the initial offshore survey to the production of the final implementation work pack.
The service includes detailed fabrication drawings, structural calculations, procedural drawings, relevant text / instructions and equipment lists.
Note: NSL can offer the services of expert riggers who are experienced in design / fabrication / offshore implementation and are available to go onsite to supervise any installation or removal of plant and equipment.

The Site Competent Person / Technical Authority
Companies need a uniform, safe approach to lifting operations. They must ensure that they are compliant with legislation and must have in place a programme to make certain that their personnel have an appropriate level of competence.
To help introduce and maintain these high standards, NSL are now offering Technical Authorities on a long or short-term contract basis.
Our personnel have a minimum of 10 - 15 years experience in the lifting industry and are supported by NSL’s Technical Department. They are subjected to rigorous in-house training programmes prior to going on contract.
The Technical Authorities roles and responsibilities would include:
- Defining and producing a client’s philosophy, strategy and standards for lifting operations ensuring industry best practice is incorporated
- Advising on suitable regulations and standards to ensure that the client meets their legal requirements and / or industry best practice
- Reviewing and approving policies and procedures
- Ensuring that Safety Critical Elements are maintained
- Reviewing and providing technical input for projects
- Auditing locations for compliance with company procedures and controlling follow-up actions
- Assisting with or giving guidance on incident investigations
- Developing, reviewing and / or approving maintenance and examination schemes
- Providing guidance and approval for risk mitigating measures when normal standards are not achievable
- Consulting with other Technical Authorities
- Continuously reviewing information from industry bodies, for example the HSE, and other sources to ensure company procedures are kept up to date
- Continuously seeking to enhance safety through improved processes, systems and equipment
- Reviewing and advising on the appropriate training and competence levels for personnel
NSL Technical Authorities are also qualified to: - Train and assess to international standards
- Carry out on-site coaching and mentoring
In addition, the major benefit when using a NSL Technical Authority is the access you now have to the extensive depth of knowledge and experience of our technical department and Instructors. Think of it not as just employing one person but a whole department for the price of one.
Technical Department
NSL Technical Department can be contacted to answer technical questions relating to lifting equipment and lifting operations.
This service is offered to support our clients when using the NSL product range.
A charge for this service is based on the amount of time and detail required in the answer or in the production of a document.
However, the majority of verbal questions we would expect to receive, need only a short answer which is supplied free of charge.
NSL Technical Department will also review lifting plans submitted by the client. This service is provided to give the client confirmation that the lifting operation has been planned competently, meets with regulatory requirements and is within industry guidelines. Any non-conforming practices would be highlighted for further investigation and resolution.
